Blazenet: a packet-switched wide-area network with photonic data path

چکیده
AbstmctHigh-performance wide-area networks are required to interconnect clusters of computers connected by local area and metropolitan area networks. Optical fiber technology provides long distance channels in the multigigabit per second range. The challenge is to provide switching nodes that handle these data rates with minimum delay, and at a reasonable cost. In this paper, we describe a packet-switching network with photonic data path, christened Blazenet,’ that provides low delay and has minimal memory requirements. It can be extended to support multicast and priority delivery. Such a network can revolutionize the opportunities for distributed command and control, information and resources sharing, real-time conferencing, and wide-area parallel computation.

متن کاملDynamic optical packet/burst-switched metropolitan area network
The development of key technologies for high-capacity optical transmission has made possible transmission experiments with very high data rates and a large number of wavelength channels. Based on the recent development of enabling technology, optical network functionality has made progress from simple point-to-point wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) links to automatically switched optical n...
متن کاملEXPERIMENTAL IMPLEMENTATIONS OF MULTIWAVELENGTH PHOTONIC PACKET SWITCHES - Military Communications Conference, 1995. MILCOM '95, Conference Record, IEEE
Photonic packet switches offer the high speed, data rate and format transparency, and flexibility required by future computer communications and cell-based telecommunications networks. We review experimental progress in Multiwavelength photonic packet switches with an emphasis on all-optical guided wave systems. The term all-optical implies that the data portion of a packet remains in optical f...
متن کاملAn algorithm for loopless deflection in photonic packet-switched networks
In this paper, we present a label-based approach for implementing deflection in a photonic packet network, and we introduce an algorithm for determining deflection options in a manner which eliminates looping. A general analytical model is developed to evaluate packet loss probabilities in networks with deflection. The analysis may be applied to a wide class of deflection schemes and may be app...

Future interconnection networks will be required to achieve ultra-high bandwidth and low latency communications to cope with the increasing performance requirements of backbone routers, large data storage systems and supercomputing systems. Aiming at achieving ultra-high bandwidth communications and approaching optical time-of-flight processing latency while being robust to cascade impairments,...
